Levee Study Results Now Available

With 45 miles of levees in Multnomah County near the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the East Columbia neighborhood is in the Peninsula Drainage District #2 and is in a managed flood plain. The levees reduce the risk of flooding for tens of thousands of jobs, neighborhoods, local farms, parks and natural areas, and critical infrastructure like the Portland International Airport and a source of drinking water serving 800,000 Oregonians. Levee Ready Columbia is working to prepare our community for future floods.

Levee Ready Columbia will ensure that the levees and other flood management infrastructure remain accredited by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and remain in good standing in the US Army Corps of Engineers' (the Corps) Rehabilitation and Inspection Program (RIP). Accreditation from FEMA is necessary to ensure that property owners have access to the discounted flood insurance provided through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

At a recent meeting of East Columbia and Bridgeton neighbors, staff from FEMA, Army Corps of Engineers, Multnomah County, Cornforth Consultants and Multnomah County Drainage District explained results of a study that was done to determine how development on the levee, specifically structures built on, in, or adjacent to the levee, influence the performance of the levee during a high water event. They provided information for property owners and answered questions in regard to existing encroachments. To view the study results, visit the Levee Ready Columbia website and navigate to "Technical and Engineering Reports", then "PEN 2 Encroachment Summary Report General".

Voice Your Air Quality Concerns

Residents in nearby communities have been experiencing ongoing air quality issues and recently a packed house at a Hayden Island community meeting provided strong feedback to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Input about our air quality from citizens is vital - these reports inform and guide DEQ's approach to addressing the issue.

Report foul odors to DEQ online or call the DEQ odor hotline at 888-997-7888.
